Interactive Storytelling: Bringing Celtic Life to Young Learners

With a mission to educate and inspire, Keltenwelt am Glauberg sought to immerse pupils in the daily life of the Celts through an engaging and interactive experience. Perched atop the Glauberg hill in Germany, this archaeological museum is dedicated to preserving and showcasing Celtic heritage through exhibitions, research, and educational programs.

We teamed up with the museum staff to create an immersive graphic novel game, enriched with mini-games, to educate pupils about the daily life of the Celts. Despite a tight budget and starting with only a single exhibition board for assets, our creative collaboration brought a captivating and educational story to life.

Crafting the Story: A Day with Hano and Eli

At the heart of the project is a compelling story designed to resonate with young audiences. We developed the storyline, which was then meticulously reviewed and refined by the museum staff to ensure historical accuracy and educational value.

Story Overview:

  • Main Characters: Hano (a boy) and Eli (a girl)

  • Setting: A Celtic village bustling with preparations for an unnamed celebration

  • Gameplay Choice: Players select to experience the story as either Hano or Eli

Hano’s Quest:

  • Objective: Hano plans to present his special lamb at the celebration, but it has run away. He embarks on a journey to find it before the festivities begin.

  • Learning Focus: Through his search, players learn about farming, hunting, town defense, and town development.

Eli’s Quest:

  • Objective: Eli has crafted a beautiful vase as a gift, but it has been misplaced. She sets out to locate it in time for the celebration.

  • Learning Focus: Her journey teaches players about pottery, herbs, fire making, sewing, and trading.

Interactive Learning Through Mini-Games

Integrated within the narrative are several mini-games that enhance engagement and provide educational value. These activities are skippable, allowing players to tailor their experience.

Learning Topics Covered:

  • Pottery: Crafting and decorating clay vessels

  • Herbal Knowledge: Identifying and using herbs for remedies

  • Fire Making: Techniques for starting and maintaining a fire

  • Sewing: Creating and repairing garments

  • Hunting: Skills and tools used in hunting

  • Town Defense: Understanding village fortifications and safety measures

  • Trading: Engaging in bartering and trade practices

  • Food Preparation: Learning about traditional Celtic cuisine

  • Smith Working: Exploring metalwork and tool creation

  • Farming: Discovering agricultural practices and crop cultivation

These interactive elements provide a fun and immersive way for pupils to learn about the Celts, making history accessible and engaging.

Technical Implementation: Unity and WebGL

To bring this interactive story to life, we utilized modern technologies that ensured both performance and accessibility.

Development Highlights:

  • Unity Engine: The game was developed using Unity, providing a robust platform for creating interactive 2D experiences.

  • Fungus Plugin: We employed the Fungus Plugin within Unity, which is ideal for crafting narrative-driven games without extensive coding. It allowed for smooth dialogue sequences and user choices.

  • WebGL Deployment: The game was deployed as a WebGL application on the museum’s website, enabling players to access it directly from their web browsers without the need for downloads or installations.

Creative Asset Utilization on a Tight Budget

With budget constraints, we maximized the use of existing resources to produce a high-quality game.

  • Asset Source: All visual elements were derived from a single exhibition board provided by the museum.

  • Environment and Characters: We adapted and altered elements from the exhibition board to create the full range of environments and characters needed for the story.

  • Minimal New Creations: Only a few new assets were created to supplement the existing ones, ensuring consistency in style and design.

  • Visual Enhancements: Effects were added to enrich the visual storytelling, creating a more immersive experience.

  • Authentic Audio: Official music from the museum was incorporated, adding an authentic auditory dimension to the game.

Collaboration with Museum Experts

Our close collaboration with the museum staff was crucial in ensuring the game’s educational effectiveness.

  • Story Refinement: Museum experts reviewed the storyline, providing insights to ensure historical accuracy and cultural authenticity.

  • Educational Alignment: The content was aligned with educational goals, making it suitable for classroom use and complementing the museum’s educational programs.

Positive Impact and Future Opportunities

The graphic novel game has become a valuable tool for the museum, enhancing their outreach and educational impact.

Benefits:

  • Engagement: Provides an interactive platform that captivates young audiences.

  • Accessibility: Available online, it reaches a wider audience beyond physical visitors.

  • Educational Value: Supports learning objectives by making history tangible and relatable.

Future Plans:

  • Content Expansion: Potential to expand the story with additional characters and quests.

  • Language Options: Adding multilingual support to reach a broader audience.

  • Feedback Integration: Collecting user feedback to refine and improve the game experience.
